In this symposium on pulmonary emergencies, Dr. Sloane describes the clinical, radiographic, pathologic and physiologic characteristics of ARDS. This is followed by a review of the four principle types of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), strategies to minimize VILI, and advanced therapeutic options for patients with severe ARDS. This is followed by a review of the clinical manifestations and management of pulmonary embolism and pneumothorax.
